Present Perfect Transformations | LinguaCorner
🌉 The Present Perfect is the bridge between the past and the present.
In exam paraphrases, your job is to cross that bridge without changing the meaning of the sentence.
🇵🇱 Present Perfect to most między przeszłością a teraźniejszością.

①

Count your words

Use 2–5 words (B1/B2). Contractions like haven’t count as 2 words (have + not) in most boards — check your exam rules!
🇵🇱 Użyj 2–5 słów. Formy skrócone jak haven’t to zwykle 2 słowa (have + not) — sprawdź zasady swojego egzaminu!

②

Never change the Key Word

If the prompt gives you SINCE, you cannot write for. The key word must appear in your answer unchanged.
🇵🇱 Jeśli zadanie daje ci SINCE, nie możesz napisać for. Słowo kluczowe musi pojawić się w odpowiedzi w niezmienionej formie.

③

Check the polarity

If sentence 1 is positive (The last time I was…), sentence 2 is often negative (I haven’t been…).
🇵🇱 Jeśli zdanie 1 jest twierdzące (The last time I was…), zdanie 2 jest często przeczące (I haven’t been…). Nie pomyl!

④

Tense consistency

If the situation is still true NOW, you must use Present Perfect, not Past Simple.
🇵🇱 Jeśli sytuacja jest nadal prawdziwa TERAZ, musisz użyć Present Perfect, a nie Past Simple.

⚠️ This lesson is designed to be studied pattern by pattern. Click each tab above (Pattern A → E) to learn the rule, see examples, then practise. The final Exam tab has the full timed transformation set.
Pattern A — The Rule / Zasada

When a sentence says “the last time X happened was Y ago”, you can rewrite it using Present Perfect negative + for or since.
🇵🇱 Jeśli zdanie mówi “ostatni raz X zdarzyło się Y temu”, przepiszemy je używając Present Perfect w przeczeniu + for (okres czasu) lub since (punkt w czasie).

Past SimpleThe last time I bought a car was ten years ago. — Ostatnim razem, kiedy kupiłem samochód, było to dziesięć lat temu.
Pres. Perf.I haven’t bought a car for ten years. — Nie kupiłem samochodu od dziesięciu lat.
Subject + haven't / hasn't + V₃ + for [period] / since [point in time]
🇵🇱 Jeśli zdanie mówi “ostatni raz X zdarzyło się Y temu”, przepisujemy je używając Present Perfect w przeczeniu + for (okres czasu) lub since (punkt w czasie).

📊 FOR vs SINCE — Quick Reference / Szybkie porównanie

WordUse withExamples🇵🇱
FOR Period of time / Okres czasu
🇵🇱 Używamy z wyrażeniami mówiącymi JAK DŁUGO coś trwa
for ten years · for a month · for three weeks od dziesięciu lat / od miesiąca
SINCE Point in time / Punkt w czasie
🇵🇱 Używamy z wyrażeniami mówiącymi OD KIEDY coś trwa
since 2020 · since Monday · since October od 2020 / od poniedziałku / od października

🔎 More Examples / Więcej przykładów

Ex 1I last saw my cousin in October. → I haven’t seen my cousin since October. — Ostatnio widziałem kuzyna w październiku → Nie widziałem kuzyna od października.
Ex 2We moved to this house ten years ago. → We have lived in this house for ten years.
Ex 3It last rained three weeks ago. → It hasn’t rained for three weeks. — Ostatnio padało trzy tygodnie temu → Nie padało od trzech tygodni.
⚠️ Polarity trap! The source sentence is often positive (last saw, last went), but the target uses negative Present Perfect (hasn’t seen, haven’t gone). Don’t miss this!

When you do something for the first time, it means you have never done it before. These two sentences mean the same thing!

→It’s the first time I have been to this restaurant. — To mój pierwszy raz w tej restauracji.
↔I have never been to this restaurant before. — Nigdy wcześniej nie byłem w tej restauracji.
DirectionFormulaExample
First Time → Never

Pattern C — The Rule / Zasada

Exams love asking about when a state began versus how long it has lasted. A Past Simple with started/began becomes a Present Perfect with since or for.
Past Simple z started/began zamieniamy na Present Perfect z since lub for.

Pres. Perf.I have lived in this “green” house since 2020. — Mieszkam w tym domu od 2020 roku.
